2013 MLB Betting – MLB Weekend Picks For Saturday, August 31

Game 1: Chicago White Sox @ Boston Red Sox – Saturday, August 31

No matter which bookie software you trust, the overarching reality of the situation suggests that you should give a slight edge to the Red Sox here, but only a slight one.

The sports betting sites that focus on baseball will plainly point out that while Jake Peavy is a much bigger name than John Danks, he is not that much better a pitcher, at least as far as earned-run average (one of the core measurements of a pitcher’s quality) is concerned. Peavy is the pitcher who was traded just before the trading deadline, as Boston acquired him in an attempt to become a more formidable team for the stretch run and then the playoffs in October. Danks was not seen as an important commodity by big-league clubs. Yet, if you look at ERA, these pitchers are fairly close. Danks has a 4.15 ERA, while Peavy’s mark sits at 3.99. That’s a very slight differential. Yes, Peavy beat the Los Angeles Dodgers this past Sunday, causing the Dodgers to lose their first series in roughly two months. However, Danks – whose win-loss record is awful – has pitched a lot better than his record shows. More to the point, Danks has allowed a total of just two runs in his last two starts, encompassing 14 innings. This is a very even pitching matchup, and that’s why you shouldn’t be too confident that Boston is going to win.

However, if pressed to make a selection here, you should still take the Red Sox. The reason is not really the pitching matchup, though. It’s the difference in hitting between the teams. Boston has a solid lineup with very few holes, while Chicago’s offense has been one of the most impotent in all of baseball, not just the American League. If you’re expecting a team to get a big base hit over the course of a game, the White Sox are one of the last teams you’d want to look at. Go with Boston because of the Red Sox’ batting order.

MLB Betting Pick: Boston

Game 2: San Francisco Giants @ Arizona Diamondbacks – Saturday, August 31

When looking at bet online reviews, you have to wonder if the Arizona Diamondbacks are going to make a charge in the National League wild card race. Time is running out for Arizona, which has been losing ground in recent weeks to the Cincinnati Reds. In this game, though, the D-Backs should thrive. Ryan Vogelsong is the starter for San Francisco. He’s a competent but not spectacular pitcher. Arizona’s starter in this game is staff ace and 2013 All-Star Patrick Corbin. One has to concede that Corbin is in a higher league compared to Vogelsong. That reality should be enough to give Arizona the win here.

MLB Betting Pick: Arizona

Game 3: Tampa Bay Rays @ Oakland Athletics – Saturday, August 31

The Athletics should be the pick at a trusted and reputable sportsbook. This past Monday, Tampa Bay was thrashed by Kansas City, as the Rays watched underperforming starter Jeremy Hellickson stumble through another poor outing. Hellickson is going to face a tough task when he goes up against Oakland’s batting order, which has a lot of hitters that don’t get cheated at the plate. Take Oakland in this matchup. Tampa Bay’s pitching is likely to suffer in this contest.

MLB Betting Pick: Oakland
