New England Patriots (1-1, 1-1 ATS) vs Baltimore Ravens (1-1, 2-0 ATS)
Odds: Baltimore -3, 49 o/u
New England and Baltimore are both looking for redemption this week as they try to bounce back from tough week two losses. It’s hardly where either team thought they’d be, so we’re expecting some very solid play from both teams when they meet up today in Baltimore.
Baltimore’s once vaunted defense isn’t quite dominating opponents the way they once did and are giving up over 400 yards a game (275 pass/129 rushing). New England, on the other hand, allows around 265 a game with only 63 of those coming on rushes.
On the offensive side, New England hasn’t faltered so much as the Ravens have surged. Joe Flacco is 43-71 for 531 yards, 3 TDs and just one interception. Compare that to Brady who’s thrown 51-77 for 552 yards, 3 TDs and a single interception.
Last week New England came up short in a 20-18 disappoint against the St. Louis Cardinals in a game that came down to a last minute NE field goal attempt.
Head coach Bill Belichick expressed disappoint at every aspect of his team’s play and we’d imagine that they’ve been working very hard this week to correct those mistakes. The Pats were, perhaps, a bit overconfident going into St. Louis but we don’t expect to see anything like that today.
For their part, the Ravens played very well last week against the Eagles, but just couldn’t seal the deal. They wound up losing 24-23, but forced 4 turnovers and made life very tough for Eagles QB Michael Vick.
On paper, the Ravens match up very well against the Patriots, which forces handicappers and bettors to take a closer look at the more intangible factors. When that’s the case, we’ll always defer to Tom Brady’s competitive spirit and mile-long list of successes.
This game has all makings of an upset and that’s exactly what we’re predicting. New England isn’t likely to lose two in a row.
