It’s a big day for sports fans. Virtually all the nation’s best football services are having great years, but so many have significant bets. Also UFC 152 odds are posted. Vitor Belfort vs Jon Jones Light Heavyweight Championship fight headlining a big card.
The Canadian Crew starts out with a free pick.
Florida Atlantic Owls (1-2, 1-2 ATS) vs #1 Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0, 2-1 ATS) Odds: Alabama -49.5, 57.5 o/u
Alabama is the dominant force in college football this year and their beatdowns of Michigan and Arkansas were extremely impressive. So how will they fare against the Florida Atlantic Owls? It’s a game that seems like gimme, but that -49.5 line could spell trouble for point spread bettors.
There’s no question that the Crimson Tide will come up on top in Tuscaloosa today. Moneyline bettors in this one are facing astronomical odds that would require federal funding to pay out anything substantial. The Vegas consensus is something like Florida Atlantic +80000/Alabama -250000, so plunk down a quarter million to win $100.
It’s easy to write off the Owls entirely in this one, but we’re going to say not-so-fast. Yes, the Tide just handed the Arkansas Razorbacks their first home shutout since the 1960’s, piling on 52 points along the way. But Florida Atlantic is not an SEC rival and there’s won’t be much glory in mopping the floor with them today.
Anytime the line on a college football game is hovering in the stratosphere like this, the underdog is always a good play. We like the fact that Alabama only beat the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers by 35 (they were favored by 38). We also like the fact that the Owls were able to put up come up the 20 points against the #7 Georgia Bulldogs last week (they went into that one as 41-point underdogs).
In a game like this, a single field goal is enough to wreck point spread dreams. Despite the fact that no one has scored on Alabama since the third quarter of week one, the Owls do have a shot at putting something up today. And this is an instance when that’s all it’s going to take.
That 57.5 over is a bit of stretch and speaks to the sportsbooks’ ability to outfox the betting public. We’re staying away from it entirely because we think the Tide will be holding back a bit and not interested in excessively running up the score.
But that’s not the biggest play of the Crew. The splendid Canadian Crew has three more lock winners including the College Football Game of the Year on Michigan vs. Notre Dame among three lock winning picks. But without question the best bet in the handicapping industry in college or pro football this season goes with the clash between the Wolverines and Fighting Irish. These studs also have the Clemson vs. Florida State clash. Get the picks now
