NFL Preseason Odds, Plus Free Sports Picks Top Thursday Betting News

Matt Rivers has a free pick on the Atlanta Braves. Jair Jurrjens was banged up and awful during the first month of this season and deserved the demotion to Gwinnett. I’m not sure if the righty is going to be close to “all the way” back but he is healthier at this point and did build back some confidence in the minors. Let’s not forget how just last year Jurrjens was basically the best pitcher in the first three months of the season. He had a chance to start the All-Star Game ahead of the great Roy Halladay before falling back a little in the final four or so starts before the game. Yes things have gone south this year but there is an upside there and at this price worth a stab.

I really do like Jon Lester and won’t say much negative about the southpaw.  But with that said Lester has been very underachieving and inconsistent so far in 2012 and if we don’t see the star Lester than I am more than fine to grab such a healthy price back with what still is a very good Atlanta team.

The Braves have the potential to go on a big-time run. They have a capable lineup with Bourn, Uggla, Heyward, McCann and others and with the Sox lineup half a shell of itself I’m not fearing Bobby V’s hitters, I’m just not.

As for the relievers it’s not even close. Give me O’Flaherty, Venters and Kimbrel against the mediocre at the very best Boston bullpen and I’ll  take my chances here even if they have the advantage with the starters.

The Sox laying a chunk of change right now is just not right. Not even Big Papi likes playing in Beantown anymore and in the end the Bravos plus this much with a possibly rejuvenated Jurrjens is my play in the end!

On the other hand, the wunderkinds have a winner from the AL. Los Angeles Angels at Boston Red Sox, Thursday at 7:10 p.m. ET

The Angels will send C.J. Wilson to the mound.  The lefty is 9-9 with a 3.63 ERA this season, but he’s caught in the midst of a horrendous run.  Wilson entered his July 6 start against Baltimore with a 2.33 ERA, but it’s climbed well over a full run in his past nine starts.  The Angels are 1-8 in those games, while Wilson himself is 0-5.  He’s coming off a nightmarish outing against the Rays, when he coughed up seven runs in just 4.2 innings of work.  Wilson has yet to face Boston this season, but he’s 4-1 with a 1.43 ERA in 17 career appearances against the Sox, though just five were starts.

Boston will give the nod to Franklin Morales.  The southpaw has made 36 appearances this season, including eight starts.  He’s gone 3-4 with a 3.67 ERA with 73 Ks in 73.2 innings.  Morales has started in his past three outings, and he was quite sharp in the first two, allowing four runs in 11.1 innings.  It was a different story in last week’s loss to the Yankees, as Morales was pelted for five runs in 5.1 innings.  He’s made just one career appearance against the Red Sox, allowing a pair of runs in 1.1 innings of relief.

Neither pitcher inspires much confidence right now.  But while Wilson has had some rough outings lately, he’s also delivered some very healthy ones (three runs or less in four of his past six starts).  Go with the better talent in Wilson.
