Colorado Rockies v San Francisco Giants

Odds: CR +215/SF -230; 7 o/u

Colorado has a chance to continue shaking up the NL West when they head to Pac-Ball Park to take on the Giants Tonight. San Fran is sitting just one game ahead of the Dodgers, who are still reeling from losing two-of-three at home to the lowly Rocks. The question is exactly how well their spoiler act will keep as it travels up the Pacific Coast?

This week’s wins over the Dodgers have been a singular bright spot in a dismal post-break run for the Rockies. In fact, it’s the first time they’ve won two games in a row since the end of June. Otherwise, they’ve gone 7-14 since the All-Star Game. But after winning the first two, very low-scoring, games in that series, Colorado went right back to 2012 form by losing 6-4.

Today’s starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz (1-6, 4.76 ERA) played well against LA on Monday. Over four innings he gave up just three hits, no runs and struck out seven. (Though that was his first quality game in quite some time.) While he played well in LA, he may be stymied by Colorado’s 76-pitch count rule before he really gets into a groove in San Francisco.

Starting things off for the Giants is Matt Cain (10-5, 3.01 ERA). Cain is definitely not struggling this season, though his last couple starts haven’t been his best. On Monday night he gave up five runs on eight hits to the Cardinals, including one home run. Cain has also been giving up a lot more hits than usual over the past couple weeks. But since he’s facing a team that’s only put up nine runs in their last three games combined, he should do well.

Colorado surprised the Dodgers, but that’s not likely to happen in San Francisco. The last time these teams met up, in Denver, the Giants deliver the Rockies a couple of the most lopsided losses in franchise history. Normally you’d expect a team in this situation to be gunning for revenge, but the Colorado team just doesn’t have it in them.

Take SF in this one.

The Pick: San Francisco -230

Top expert pick on today’s card is from the Canadien Crew. The wunderkinds are quite focused and off yet another 2-0 sweep including the 49ers as the first named play on NFLX.
