Milwaukee Brewers v St. Louis Cardinals

Odds: MIL +180/STL -190, 9 o/u

The Milwaukee Brewers are hoping that a few wins over the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend will help close the seven game gap between the two teams in the NL Central. They’ve got plenty of ground to make up after a disastrous 8-11 post break record that’s put the success of their season in serious jeopardy.

At 10-9 after the break, St. Louis is eight games out of first place and can’t afford too many slip ups from here on out.

Starting out the STL rotation is Adam Wainwright (8-10, 4.24 ERA). Wainwright’s saw a few quality starts last season and recently became the first Cardinals pitcher to put up an RBI since the middle of April.

In his last start, he held the LA Dodgers to just two runs and seven hits over seven innings. Along the way he struck out seven Dodgers. Earlier this week Wainwright threw six innings against Chicago that yielded just two runs on six hits. In that effort he struck out five and walked one.

Despite their shaky post-break record, the Cards have been hitting very well lately. They’ve outscored opponents 66-48 over their last ten games. This could cause some problems for the struggling Brewers.

Taking the mound for Milwaukee is the young Mark Rogers (0-0, 3.18 ERA). Rogers just got the call up from Milwaukee’s Triple club in Nashville and July 29 and hasn’t seen much action since then. He threw well against Washington earlier in the week with just two runs on six hits in five innings. Not bad for his first MLB action.

Milwaukee took two of three the last time these teams met a few weeks in a series of low scoring, very tight games. Given that the Brewers have gone 4-9 and the Cardinals 9-4 since then, we’re not too optimistic about Milwaukee’s chances today.

Watch for St. Louis to dominate today.

The Pick: St. Louis -190
