Meanwhile, the Canadian Crew checks in with a free sports pick. Pittsburgh Pirates vs Houston Astros

Odds: PITT -155/HOU +145, 8.5 o/u

How tough is life for the Houston Astros? Heading into their current series against the surging Pirates they’d lost nine straight; as of Friday, that number was ten. Since the All-Star break they’re an ugly 1-13. Oh, and their starting pitcher is a solid 0-0 and has bounced around the MLB like a rubber ball.

In the hot seat for the Astros is Armando Galarraga (26-30, 4.69 career ERA). The Venezuelan has had a hard luck career and has already been dropped by the Orioles this season.

Is a game against one of the best teams in the league the best place to see if you’re ready to return to the big leagues? Galarraga has proven himself capable of the big game in the past, but his position is hardly enviable.

Can Galarraga expect a little help from those hot, hot Houston bats today? In a word, “no.” during their ten game losing streak, Houston has averaged 2.9 runs a game and have only scored more than three runs in a single game twice since the break.

If there’s any good news for Galarraga and company today, it’s that not many people will see the outcome of the game in person. Crowds in the 15,000 range are becoming a common occurrence for the Astros.

Pittsburgh is starting off their rotation Wandy Rodriguez (7-9, 3.79 ERA). Rodriguez should have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the Astros, since just last week he was traded from Houston to the Pirates in a multi-player deal. Rodriguez has struggled a bit this season and is carrying a beefy 4.76 ERA over 28 innings pitched this month.

The big difference for Rodriguez pitching today, over his pitching a week ago, is that he can expect a little offensive support. Over their last ten games, the Pirates have been averaging closer to 3.8 runs a game. Pitching with this kind of support could help Rodriguez take his game up a few notches.

Look for Pittsburgh to put up a decisive win against the Astros today.

The Pick: Pittsburgh -155
