We start out with a free pick from the Canadian Crew:

Pittsburgh Pirates vs Milwaukee Brewers

Odds: PITT +125/MIL -135

The Pirates are looking to thwart history in the second half of the 2012 season by charging their way to their first winning season in almost two decades. Today they’re facing off against the Milwaukee Brewers and have a great opportunity to rack up a few more divisional wins as they race towards the finish line.

Taking the mound for the Pirates today is Kevin Correia (5-6, 4.34 ERA). Before the break, Correia was rolling a bit with 2 wins and a save over his last three games. He’s been carrying around that beefy ERA since late April, but has benefited from the Pittsburgh Renaissance on the offensive side of the game.

The last time Correia faced off against the Brewers was back in June and things worked out pretty well for him. Over six innings he gave up just two runs on five hits. Unfortunately, both those runs were solo home runs and he only struck out two batters. This is likely the result of the high number of fly balls generated off his pitches.

With an offensive assist from power hitters Andrew McCutchen and Ryan Brown, Pittsburgh will be giving Milwaukee starter Marco Estrada (0-3, 4.06) a real challenge. That said, underestimating Estrada would be a real mistake.

Estrada’s not seeing a lot of decisions, but played pretty well in the first half of the season. In his last three games before the break he gave up just five runs on nine hits and generated 21 strikeouts. In his last outing, a 5-3 wins against Houston, Estrada threw three scoreless, hitless innings.

So far this season the Pirates are 2-1 against the Brewers and a couple of those games were pretty tight.

Bettors should take note that before the break the over paid out in six of Milwaukee’s last ten games and seven of Pittsburgh’s last ten.

So long as the Pirate top dogs are still in fighting shape after summer vacation, Pittsburgh has the edge in this one.

The Pick: Pittsburgh Pirates +125
