What a huge sports day. The Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics play for the right to face the Oklahoma Thunder in the NBA Finals. Bradley vs. Pacquiao battle in the squared circle, while the Jersey Devils try to keep their Stanley Cup Championship hopes alive against the Los Angeles Kings.

The real Matt Rivers of OffshoreInsiders.com check in with a free pick for Saturday on the Seattle Mariners (+118) to Los Angeles.

Clayton Kershaw is a superstar for sure but his last two starts haven’t been as good and now in interleague action I’ll back the home dog Mariners and take my chances.

Seattle’s offense is far from being good and overall is mediocre at best. Jason Vargas, though, has been a very good story early on with his seven wins and solid era and I can see him here at Safeco continue to run. The guy is a quality start machine and should do the usual seven innings and two or three runs here. If Kershaw is on his game that may not be good enough but after the recent struggles and being in this abnormal spot I’ll fade the lefty.

Don Mattingly’s Dodgers continue to impress without Matt Kemp but they are still not the most talented team out there. They just swept the Phillies on the road and now stay outside of Los Angeles on this trip while having to play by American League rules which is not easy.

The Dodgers are a bit overvalued these days and a decent fade as they will come back down to Earth in the near future.

Rivers pick: Seattle

The wunderkinds of the Canadian Crew agree. Los Angeles Dodgers vs Seattle Mariners

Odds: LAD -130/SEA +120; 9.5 o/u

Los Angeles appears to be back to their winning ways after sweeping the Phillies and helping undo the damage from their five-game losing streak in late May. Now with three games in Seattle, they’ve got a chance to put even more room between them and their arch rivals, the San Franciso Giants.

The biggest challenge LA is facing today comes from their own starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw (4-3, 2.55 ERA). Kershaw’s been suffering from planta fasciitis recently and really hasn’t been playing up to his own high standards. He did look very good across 7 innings against the hapless Phillies. Still, he gave up 3 runs on 8 hits and struck out 5. Prior to that, he gave up losses to both Milwaukee and Houston.

LA’s current road trip didn’t get off to a good start when they gave up 2 of 3 to the, then red-hot, Colorado Rockies. But after sweeping the Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love (and aggressive sports fans) they’ve got to be feeling pretty confident.

Offensively, the LA bats shouldn’t have much to worry about in Seattle. They outscored the Phillies 20-12 and could expect similar results against the Mariners.

For Seattle, the Dodgers are a challenge they don’t necessarily need. They just enjoyed a nice 2-of-3 run against the other Los Angeles team. While they did put up the wins, they didn’t exactly blow out the Angels. It’s tough to picture teams that struggle against the Angels grabbing too many from the Dodgers.

The Mariners are starting off with Jason Vargas (7-4, 3.64). Vargas is playing pretty consistently and is giving Seattle an opportunity to stay ahead of the competition. In his last start, on Monday against the Angels, he gave up 4 runs, including 2 home runs, and 4 runs. Over the course of 5.2 innings he also struck out 8 and walked just 2.

Seattle has the ability produce a large amount of runs when given the opportunity, and Vargas may well give them that opportunity. Across their last 5 games they’ve scored a total of 28 runs. But thanks to some mediocre pitching, they’ve given up 30.

The Dodgers still aren’t back to dominating teams, despite their performance in Philly and we like the Mariners chances of putting up a lot of runs and scraping out the upset.

The Pick: Seattle +120
