Betting Odds NBA Pick Heat vs. Celtics Game 3, Plus Baseball Locks

Senior Handicapper Matt Rivers of has a free pick Friday is on the Seattle Mariners.

Reasoning: Jake Peavy has been great this season and I have probably been slow to recognize that as I can’t believe the righty has come back full circle after a few years of injuries and garbage. So I do have to give Peavy his due and the White Sox have been playing some high quality ball of late. But with that said I will take whatever I can with a superstar hurler in Felix Hernandez in this spot.

I’m not expecting the mediocre Mariners to plate another 21 runs as they just did in Arlington a few nights ago, or even average the 15 plus in the past two games, but at least Seattle has shown some signs of late and if they can beat the high powered Rangers a few times I will take my chances here at US Cellular with their superstar ace on the bump.

Chicago has won eight in a row and 12 of their last 13 so they certainly come in feeling pretty good about themselves. But I’m not at all buying in on them or on Peavy and to get the still well superior King Felix and the at least capable enough M’s makes me fine with tonight’s visitor at this price.

Rivers pick: Seattle

Now to the wunderkinds of the Canadien Crew. Miami Heat at Boston Celtics (-1) – Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET

The Heat are sitting pretty on the NBA odds after a 115-111 overtime win over the Celtics on Wednesday.  So far, Miami has leaned almost entirely on LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, but somebody else finally stepped up in Game 2.  Mario Chalmers had a great night, putting up 22 points, six assists, and four rebounds.  But expecting that on a regular basis is foolhardy; Chalmers has scored double-digit points just three times in his eight playoff games.  James and Wade did their thing, combining for 56 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 assists.  They’ll have to do the same – or better – to keep momentum rolling.

Boston wasted a brilliant performance by Rajon Rondo.  He was absolutely brilliant, posting 44 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds.  The Celtics leaned almost exclusively on their starting lineup, which scored all but seven of the team’s points.  Four of the starters recorded 40-plus minutes (including 53 for Rondo), while only one bench player picked up more than 15 minutes of action.  That seems like a poor strategy, considering the Heat don’t have a ton of depth – running Miami into the ground with fresh legs would make more sense.

It’s desperation time for the Celtics.  They’re heading home and head coach Doc Rivers will likely utilize the bench a little better.  They only need to cover by a single point, and if they’re going to win one game, it will be on Friday.

Pick:  Boston

For more information: Matt Rivers said The Thunder rolled yesterday as I believed they would. That’s now a perfect 3-0 in the past two days as I’m really starting to feel it.
