Handicapper Matt Rivers and Canadian Crew Free Sports Picks

Senior Handicapper Matt Rivers of OffshoreInsiders.com has a free pick Tuesday is on the Seattle Mariners.

Reasoning: Jason Vargas somehow keeps eating innings and throwing quality starts. The lefty doesn’t exactly have the great stuff of others but he just plugs away game after game and overachieves to the max. Today Vargas is up against a beast of an offense in the Rangers but Josh Hamilton is probably not going to play and the pesky Mariners have shown at some points to be capable, save this last week at least.

I expect a serviceable outing from the southpaw meaning six or seven innings and three or four earned runs. I can’t expect a complete game shutout against the Texas bats, with or without Hamilton, but at Arlington I also can expect Ichiro, Seagar, and the M’s to get their share of hacks in on a mediocre and still winless Scott Feldman who was just terrible against this same Seattle offense at Safeco. The righty’s arm is far from being stretched out due to a lack of innings and that should mean five innings max.

The Rangers are a juggernaut at home and probably should win this game but at this neighborhood of $2 I’ll take my chances with Vargas and the Mariners.

Rivers pick: Seattle

Now to The Canadian Crew. Washington Nationals at Miami Marlins (-140)– Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. ET

Anibal Sanchez should pitch for Miami.  The right-hander had been incredibly consistent going into his most recent start, allowing three runs or less in his first eight outings.  Everything came undone last Thursday against San Francisco, when Sanchez was burned for five runs in 5.1 innings at work.  It was Sanchez’s third consecutive loss despite a great 2.87 ERA on the year.  He’s already faced Washington once this season, allowing two runs and striking out eight batters in seven innings (he earned a no-decision).  Sanchez typically feasts on the Nationals; he’s 7-0 with a 2.10 ERA in 18 career starts against Washington.

Edwin Jackson is off to a nice debut season with the Nationals.  Though he’s just 1-2 in nine starts, the righty owns a 3.37 ERA.  Unfortunately, he’s been burned by poor run support.  Washington has scored just two runs in Jackson’s past two games.  During that span, the veteran allowed just four runs through 15 innings of work.  To make matters worse, the Marlins are probably the last team Jackson wants to face; he’s 1-3 with a 7.17 ERA in five career appearances (four starts) against Miami.

Overall, both teams are humming along on offense right now.  With the game coming down to pitching, a big edge has to go to Miami.  Jackson is totally snakebitten, and that’s not likely to change given his history against the Marlins.

Pick:  Miami
