Highest Ranked MLB Baseball Handicappers Free Picks

The real Matt Rivers of OffshoreInsiders.com checks in with a free pick for Sunday is on the Philadelphia Phillies.

Philadelphia hooked me up in that 10 inning, 5-3 win on Friday night and I’ll go back to that well today. I don’t mind the Cardinals and am a big fan of Adam Wainwright but he’s up against the best in Roy Halladay.

Halladay certainly hasn’t been vintage Doc of late and more times than not the righty has been losing. In fact the Cy Young award winner has now dropped four of his last five decisions. With all of the above said the former Blue Jay is still quite possibly the best pitcher on the planet and to get him at around a pick just cannot be passed up.

Wainwright finally just put it all together in that last start looking like the guy who almost won a Cy Young a few seasons ago. If the righty can do it again and outpitch Halladay then I will tip my cap. But it’s asking a ton for that to happen as he is still fairly early in this comeback process and the Philadelphia starter is extremely due and should be focused to get back on the winning track.

Obviously Utley and Howard are not here but Pujols and Berkman aren’t either for them and in the end Halladay at this price, no matter the recent struggles is a deal and a semi must play.

Rivers pick: Philadelphia

Now to The Canadian Crew. Colorado Rockies vs Cincinnati Reds

Odds: CR +150/CINN -170; 9 o/u

Are the Colorado Rockies getting their act together, or are they just biding time between losing streaks? Those are the questions players and fans will be thinking when the struggling Rocks visit the red-hot Reds today.

Colorado was able to slam the brakes on the Reds’ six-game winning streak that including a four-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves. That’s been the sole bright spot in a season that just hasn’t really been going anywhere.

As of Friday they were 7-15 in the month of May, but had won their last two. That period includes 4, 5 and 6-game losing streaks. While they’ve definitely upped the efforts in their last two (winning 8-4 and 6-3 over Miami and the Reds) that’s hardly been the trend. During their 6-game streak they were outscored 43-31. So it’s not just a pitching problem.

But pitching has, indeed, been a problem, too. And starting 49-years old Jamie Moyer (2-4, 4.99 ERA) isn’t likely to help the situation much. Moyer’s slow pitch style gives up plenty of hits and not enough strikeouts to compensate. As a result, he’s walking around with a bloated ERA and regularly gives up the big hits. Look for the Reds to take advantage of this situation as much as they can.

Up first for the Reds is Mat Latos (3-2, 4.35 ERA). Latos has been anything but consistent this season, but he is prone to streaks. In his last start, a 4-3 win over Atlanta, he gave up just 2 runs on 5 hits and struck out 8. This season didn’t start out real well for Latos who at one point was carrying a monster-sized 8.22 ERA.There’s been improvement lately and he could definitely ice the troubled Rockies’ hitters.

While Colorado did put up a win in the first game of this series, that was likely a fluke. We don’t much like Moyers’ chances of keeping the Reds down, or the Rockies hopes of staying in the game.

The Pick: Cincinnati -170
