2012 Sweet 16 NCAA Bankroll Builders: Free Basketball Picks

Here are free basketball picks from several of the nation’s top sports handicappers for Monday. First from Matt Rivers, the original and real one:  take the Chicago Bulls (+2) to Orlando.

Just a few weeks ago Dwight Howard and the Magic went into the Windy City and upset these same Bulls. Tonight we could see a little revenge from the team with the best record in the entire NBA.

Derrick Rose is banged up and has missed some action of late. Certainly I would love to have the reigning MVP but even if he isn’t able to go I’ll take my chances on this still very capable Bulls team at an improved number. Orlando just banged with Lebron, D-Wade and the Heat in South Beach last night and will be on the never easy back-to-back tonight. Then to make matters even more difficult it’s the second straight night going up against a high quality defense with Noah, Boozer and the rest of Tom Thibodeau’s warriors. Last night they saw some in your face defense from all-world players and tonight they’ll get some more of that against more of a grinding blue collar Chicago team that doesn’t give you an inch. It’s tough enough to beat these Bulsl when fresh no less in this spot so even down in the magic kingdom I’ll back the visitors as they try and atone for that recent rare defeat.

Da Bulls are an amazing 37-10 overall and 18-6 on the road. For the most part they win games with Rose and without Rose and tonight with a sense of redemption on the line I’ll take my chances backing them.

Matt Rivers pick: Chicago

Now to Bill Tanner. Illinois State @ Stanford

In the National Invitational Tournament, the Illinois State Redbirds will take on the Stanford Cardinals out west. Both teams came away with a win in their first round game. The Redbirds beat Ole Miss on the road, while the Cardinal knocked off Cleveland State, at home.

Stanford finished seventh in the Pac 12 – but won 22 games. The Cardinal leading scorer was Chasson Randle, with 13.8 points per game. In the first round of the NIT – Stanford used 17 from Aaron Bright. In the Pac-12 tournament, Stanford beat Arizona State, and then lost to California. The Cardinal are scoring 70.5 points per game.

The Illinois State Redbirds upset Wichita State, and then took Creighton to overtime in the Missouri Valley Finals. Now, ISU is coming into this game after a big road win. The Redbirds have won four out of their last five. Jackie Carmichael is scoring 13.8 points and grabbing 9.6 rebounds per game.

Both teams come into the game with a 16-14 record against the spread. The Redbirds are 4-9 on the road, while Stanford has won 15 of 18 at home. The Illinois State Redbirds are once again the underdogs in this one. They are playing great basketball as of late. We are betting the Redbirds +7.5 in this game.

Tanners Tip: Illinois State Redbirds +7.5

Top expert pick on today’s card: A decent 4-2 last six and going back further, 3-0 with college basketball totals, tonight we see strong indicators of a total. We say from who and what. There is so much intel behind the Key Play of the Day, it’s no wonder the winnings are almost unprecedented in sports betting lore. Now to Vic Duke. Princeton (+7) for 3 Units ***

Princeton/Pittsburgh 7:00: Princeton has been my go to school for much of the latter stretch of the season. And I won’t jump ship here. The Tigers are a great counterpunching team—can bang with physical teams and out finesse the full court up tempo ones.

The Tigers earlier this year covered against Sweet 16 NC State 58-60 as a 13 point dog at in North Carolina. They also slugged it out successfully at another Big East foe—Rutgers, won outright at Fla State, and covered against another physical in-your-face team on the road—Drexel. Tonight, the Tigers won’t have to deal with a large crowd at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt played Wofford there in front of a measly 1490 people!

Sure, the Panthers lit it up beyond the arch knocking down 14 treys. However, it hasn’t been in their character virtually all season as a sharp shooter 3 point team (34.7%) and we’re going to look for that inconsistency to emerge here. Princeton, however, has been an efficient offensive team with Davis and Hummer as a quality outside/inside combination. And the Tigers take a workmanlike approach to defense and won’t let Woodall, Gibbs and Patterson get comfortable.

The Tigers are a sweet 41-18 ATS on the road; moreover, 19-7 ATS on the road against a team with a winning home record. The Panthers, however, are just 1-4 ATS against a team with a winning % above .600. Princeton the call.
