Free Bowl Picks From Sports Handicappers: Utah vs. Georgia Tech Odds and Predictions

Senior Handicapper Matt Rivers of OffshoreInsiders.com has a free pick Saturday is on the Utah Utes (+2) to Georgia Tech.

Reasoning: Until Paul Johnson can win a game when the other team has time to prepare I will fade the heck out of the Yellow Jackets in that spot. Utah isn’t great and obviously will not have Jordan Wynne but they haven’t had their quarterback for the bulk of the season and fared pretty well overall. Therefore with a full month to get the defense ready for the Jackets I can’t help but believe this live dog will bark in the end.

The triple option is difficult to game plan for when only having the usual five or six days to prepare. But we have seen time and time again how Tech has been smacked around in situations such as this one. LSU was an underdog at the Georgia Dome back in 2007 against the Jackets and won going away in Jordan Jefferson’s freshman season. Last season these guys fell to a service academy doing very little offensively and before that the Jackets once again as the favorite looked awful in a BCS Bowl loss to Iowa.

Tech is certainly capable of piling up a ton of yards on the ground and I’m sure they will today. Orwin Smith, Roddy Jones, David Sims and others will rotate in and out and probably rumble for about 250 plus yards today. But the passing game is fairly inconsistent and if Tevin Washington gets the bulk of the snaps we are looking at a few turnovers if recent history repeats itself.

Washington was solid earlier in the season against inferior competition but things have not been all that good of late and the last game against Georgia was a total disaster.

Kyle Whittingham’s Utes have been very up and down this season and not 100% trustworthy, I get that. These guys actually somehow lost as the 20 point favorite in the finale against a bad bad Colorado team and that cost them a spot in the inaugural Pac-12 championship game. That was the ugly, the good though was the four game winning streak previous to that and in the end today they should get the best of the one-dimensional Jackets.

Today’s free pick: Utah
