Tanner’s Tips For Preseason NFL Action On Sunday, August 28

Saturday’s preseason NFL betting action saw favorites go 5-3-1 against the spread and OVERs cash in six of nine games even though the highest total on the board (44.5) slipped UNDER when the Detroit Lions clobbered the New England Patriots 34-10.  Favorites are now 29-16-1 ATS heading into Sunday night’s battle between the New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders while Hurricane Irene has forced the New York Giants and New York Jets to play on Monday night.  These will likely be the last couple games with any meaning this preseason as most teams are expected to rest most of their starters in the final week.

Saints RB Mark Ingram hopes to win the starting job and lead the team in rushing this year.

New Orleans Saints at Oakland Raiders
Location: O.co Coliseum, Oakland, CA
Game Time: Sunday, 8 p.m. (ET)
NFL Betting Odds: Saints -4.5, Total 38.5
TV: NBC
Tanner’s Tips: The Raiders are 0-2 and hope to avoid joining Atlanta, Indianapolis and Kansas City at 0-3 after hosting the Saints.  The irony is all of those other winless teams also made the playoffs last year.  Oakland also wants to forget the ugly performance on and off the field last week at San Francisco.  The biggest news for the Raiders since then was the signing of former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor, who will not even get to play the first five games of the regular season due to a suspension after getting selected in the supplemental draft.  The Saints are focused on much bigger things like returning to the Super Bowl for the second time in three years.  New Orleans beat  the same 49ers team Oakland lost to last week in the preseason opener and is coming off a 27-14 loss at Houston.  Look for the Saints to put together one more solid effort before their preseason finale.

New York Jets at New York Giants
Location: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ
Game Time: Monday, 7 p.m. (ET)
NFL Betting Odds: Jets -2.5, Total 35
TV: NFL
Tanner’s Tips: It is difficult to say what kind of a mindset the players, coaches and fans will have for this game on Monday after Hurricane Irene is done wreaking havoc through the area.  Both teams are coming off dominant efforts a week ago, as the Giants crushed Chicago 41-13 on Monday one day after the Jets routed Cincinnati 27-7.  The G-Men are still living off their last Super Bowl victory while the Jets have been to the AFC Championship Game each of the last two years only to come up short both times.  This game means a lot more to the Jets, who have lost the last four regular-season meetings but would love nothing more to beat the Giants and build some more momentum  for this year in hopes of bringing home a Super Bowl title in February.
