Cincinnati Reds Will Win as Underdog: Betting Preview vs. Tampa Bay Rays Senior Sports Handicapper Matt Rivers has a free pick Wednesday is on the Cincinnati Reds.

Reasoning: James Shields is certainly pitching as good as ever, if not better, and the right-hander is far more trustworthy than Edinson Volquez, who is not the guy he was a few seasons back. But with that said I still cannot say that Shields is a great pitcher who truly deserves to be laying a pretty penny to Dusty Baker’s defending NL Central champions and still capable club.

The Reds have not been great this season and there is no other way to look at it. They won the division last season and have not been as good thus far this season. Cincinnati though does have a pretty high upside with the power lefty bats of Votto and Bruce to go along with Phillips and a few others and at this price with at least a guy in Volquez who has been great at some point in his career is certainly worth a play.

James Shields backers will be red-faced after today

Joe Maddon is a high quality manager and Evan Longoria and the Rays are playing much better than I or many others believed. Overall though Tampa Bay is still basically a .500 team in terms of talent and no matter how well Shields has been pitching and how many complete games he has this number is still way too much as the Reds could not only win this game but could do so going away. We’re not talking about going up against a perennial superstar hurler and backing a usual Pirates or Royals 65 type win team here and therefore I am just fine with backing the potential of the Reds at this too high of a price.

Top expert pick on this game: Cincinnati

For more information: I’m getting back on the horse right now, no ands, ifs or buts. I had a big play on the red hot Michael Pineda and the Mariners yesterday and watched Ichiro and the boys blow a 3-0 lead en route to the 5-4 loss. It just flat out stunk. I’m not sure what I can say about that except that I am still ultra confident today with my three plays. 300,000* Cardinals-Orioles and a pair of 200,000* Indians-Diamondbacks and Nationals-Angels.
